Don’t Let Success Trip You Up

It’s not easy to keep the momentum going for a company that is experiencing success. In part, the problem is recognizing that what ensured your company’s current achievements will not be enough, nor necessarily the right set of actions to continue the growth. The funny thing about success is that it has a tendency to dampen our sense of urgency and creative reach.

As Sutton and Rao state in Scaling Up Excellence – Getting to More without Settling for Less, growing a company is a ground war, not just an air war. In this age of ‘instant’ and media hyped ‘splash’, it is easy to delude ourselves. The reality is that sustained success for any company requires disciplined attention to detail, addressing both short-term realities and long-term goals, providing communications that stick – for all employees, and consistently providing the ‘why’, allowing staff the opportunity to question our ‘why’. Sutton’s and Rao’s book is filled with excellent guidance. Well worth the read.
